I was rather disappointed with this book and sad since I would give every book in this series up to now a 4 or 5 star rating. I loved the world, the mechanics, and until this book I loved the characters.One thing that I would mention is that from what I remember was that while John was attracted to Roxley he made it pretty clear that he was uncomfortable with that attraction, which is ok because anyone can look at someone else and go wow they are good looking but not be interested in them. Also, I just cant understand the authors reasoning for splitting up John and Lana, they put a lot time and effort into that relationship and realized that they love each other and that they really help balance each other out. Then he is essentially kidnapped and forced into training, which she is fully aware of, and she decides to leave him because he didn't contact her? She knew he was alive and they took him, she knew he likely wouldn't be able to contact her from another planet or even galaxy, but she also knew without a doubt that he loved her and that he would never abandon her if given a choice. When she lost someone before that mattered to her it devastated her completely and John was the only reason she was able to get over that, so how does she lose him and then moves on like everything is fine? From the way the character was portrayed I fell like she would have never given up hope as long as he was alive, especially knowing that he left to keep her safe.All that said and I would like to add that the whole thing with Ingrid was just twisted. The author made it seem like he was going to get John and her together, which in light of what happened with Lana I was not sure what to feel, then the crap on the station happens and I was just confused and honestly angry. It felt like the entire book he was building a relationship with them then just decided he didn't like it and that's that. I don't even know what the author was trying to accomplish with that whole thing and honestly I don't feel the characters even line up with what he built in the previous books anymore. This book shows that the author doesn't understand what made the series popular.The struggle,battles, and excitement of the first 2-3 books were awesome. The previous book or 2 were boring as hell.So the author worked hard to set up a situation where he could go back to what made the early series good, and then decided to timeskip it to show us more politics and social stuff.
