Ebook About Captain Iain Sinclair has looks, charm, military honours—even the favour of the king himself. He has everything—everything, that is, except the friendship of the one man whose good opinion he has ever cared for, scientist, James Hart. James has loved Iain all his life, but after the last disastrous encounter between them, he vowed to accept no more crumbs from Iain’s table. If Iain cannot be the lover James wants, then James will have no more to do with him.Disenchanted with his career, and miserable without James in his life, Iain decides to leave military service and embark upon a new career in India. Before he leaves England behind, though, he is determined to try one last time to reconcile with his dearest friend. An invitation to a country house party from James’s sister provides the perfect opportunity to pin James down and force him to finally listen to Iain’s apology. But when Iain discovers that an apology is not enough—that James is not willing settle for less than a lover—he is forced to reconsider everything: his life, his future career, and most of all, his feelings for James.Book Unnatural (Enlightenment Book 4) Review :
I love Joanna Chambers. Her Enlightenment series is, without a doubt, some of the best historical romance I've ever read - and this includes both M/M and heterosexual romance. Unnatural is a spin-off of that series, but I confess that it didn't grab me the same way the Enlightenment books did.Don't get me wrong, the writing is beautiful as always. Some readers complained about the back and forth structure, but I didn't mind it. I liked how we got to unravel Iain and James' story through flashbacks. The thing that really stopped me from loving this book was the very specific issue of how Iain treated James throughout their relationship. To put it plainly, I don't think Iain deserved James. I understand having reservations and being fearful of loving another man, especially during that historical period. But Iain's hot and cold treatment, rejecting James over and over just to go back to him each and every time; the way Iain kept James dangling on his hook; his hypocrisy in trying to deny James the right to the same sexual experiences he himself was having; his casual cruelty, coldness and inattention - it was just too much. Way too much. He wasn't just a bad lover - he was a very, very bad friend. Even his attempt to mend their relationship was selfish: he felt he had the right to demand James' forgiveness and friendship even as James was trying to preserve his sanity and boundaries. I understand that this may not be a deal breaker for some people, but it made me dislike Iain intensely, even though his contrition and regret were genuine. So, my recommendation is - definitely read the book, but be prepared to be infuriated by one of the main heroes. And definitely check out the Enlightenment trilogy. This novel, about a successful albeit former army officer struggling between fulfilling familial and societal expectations and the deep love he has for his best friend, is written by an author with a clear understanding of the historical period and her characters. You'll find direct, insightful passages and sweet, earnest and (wonderfully) irony-free metaphors and imagery based on a love of the natural world in these pages. Along with KJ Charles, I can't recommend Joanna Chambers enough as one of the best historical romance writers I've read. (I've only found one anachronistic reference in all 4 books of the Enlightenment series I've read; given the dreadful writing and lack of historical reasoning by some authors in this genre, this slip is more than forgivable, especially given the generally the strong writing).
